The Hospital Elder Life Program, or HELP

We know that many Seniors, while in the hospital, have problems with their memory, thinking and moving around. The Hospital Elder Life Program helps keep the mind and body as active as possible.

Services are provided by a team of staff and volunteers. The team includes Elder Life Specialists, Elder Life Clinical Nurse Specialist, Doctors and highly trained volunteers.

Volunteers provide these services up to 4 times a day, 7 days a week:

  • Visits by a friendly person every day
  • Activities to keep the mind working
  • Social Activities
  • Help with movement and walking
  • Ways to help to relax and sleep without medication
  • Help with eating and provide company during meals
  • Help with special needs for seeing and hearing

The Clinical Nurse Specialist and Elder Life Specialist help coordinate the care needed by patients who are a part of the HELP program.

Patients

We work with patients over 70 years old. We are on Wards 3X/3Y and 4Y at McMaster Hospital and Wards E4 & F5 at the Henderson Hospital.

Referral

No referral is needed. Patients in these areas of the hospitals are checked to see if this program will work for them.
